The Container is Loaded

Let me tell you about Vance first.

I received a phone call from him at 7:00 this morning saying that he would not be able to help load the container because he was going to see the Doctor.  When he woke up this morning and looked in the mirror, he saw a bone sticking out of this upper chest right where the seatbelt held him, so he wanted to have it checked out.  I phoned him about 9:30 and he said the doctor told him he has a dislocated shoulder and would need to go see another doctor at 2:30.  He phoned me at 5:00 to say that the doctor told him that there was absolutely nothing wrong with him.  The bone Vance saw was just his collar bone and he is perfectly okay.  I told him that I had received email after email from those of you who were praying for him.  Thank you so much.  Your prayers were not in vain.

Now about the container.  I received a phone call yesterday from the shipping company telling me that the container would be delivered at 9:00 this morning as planned.  When I arrived at the warehouse this morning at 8:45, Orton Queen was waiting for me to help load the container.

But two minutes before I arrived at the warehouse, I received a phone call from the shipping company informing me that the semi bringing the container to the warehouse had broken down ten miles from the warehouse and that they would be there as quickly as they could get the truck repaired.

Orton and I brought all the items for the container from the back of the warehouse up to the loading docks ready to be loaded in the container when it arrived.  By this time, Missionary Harold Suggs and his neighbor Tony arrived.  Harold immediately began picking out more stuff from the warehouse he wanted, like a copy machine, 25 battery back-up systems, etc.

I received another phone call from the shipping company informing me that the semi could not be repaired today and said that I had two options; load the container Friday or they could bring a container from Miami and that it would arrive at the warehouse around 2:00 p.m.  Dr. Johnny Strickland with Network of Promise is loading out several semi's tomorrow with Food for Tots.  He needs a lot of room and I would really be in his way loading Harold's container at the same time, so I told the shipping company to bring the container from Miami, that I would wait for it.

Since there was nothing more we could do but wait, Orton and Harold headed back to Lakeland.  No sooner had they left then Pastor Jerry-John Comellias of Channelside Church and his brother Chris arrived to help load the container.  We packed a couple of things but since I needed some stretch-wrap, we went to buy some.  On the way, at about 11:30,  I received another phone call from the shipping company informing me that they had a container leaving Jacksonville headed for the warehouse and that it would arrive in about two hours.  After treating me to lunch, Pastor Jerry and Chris hung out until a little after 2:30.  Missionary Harold Suggs and Tony arrived from Lakeland with  8 boxes of commentaries and we all unloaded them and put them on pallets.  Pastor Jerry and Chris had to leave, and about 30 minutes later, the container finally arrived.  We started loading at 3:00 and finished by 5:00.  Glory!  It was a long but great day.

In case you are wondering what goes in a container, here is the Load List:

141 Boxes of Textbooks

  78 Students school desks

    3 Overhead Projector Screens

    6 Large Televisions

1 Minolta Copy Machine with a collator

  25 Battery Back up systems

    8 Boxes of Commentaries

    4 Pulldown Wall Maps

  64 Computer Systems

Don't forget, we are now a nonprofit corporation and can give you a tax deduction for your donation.  Thanks for your generosity.

Vance had an accident

Vance Street is man right-hand man and friend.  Today, the two of us were working at the warehouse getting the shipment for Guyana ready for shipment at 9:00 in the morning.  When we knocked off for the day, we both headed to our homes.  About three minutes after we left, Vance phoned me and asked me to come get him because he had had an accident and had really messed up his van.

When I got in sight of the van, I found the front-end totally hugging a huge power pole.  A big pickup pulling a big trailer had stopped in front of Vance.  It seemed the driver could not decide whether to turn to the left or the right so he just stopped.  Vance was unable to stop so rather than hit the trailer and possibly knock it into another vehicle, Vance turned sharply to the right but there happened to be a light pole in his way and he hit it hard dead center.  Vance had on his seatbelt and other than being kind of sore, he seems to be okay and plans to be at the warehouse tomorrow to help load the container to Guyana.  We are both sure his van is totaled.  He has only had it about six months.  But, Praise the Lord, Vance is okay.  Remember to pray for him that there will be no whiplash.  Hitting a light pole at 20 miles and hour is a sudden jolt.

Container for Guyana

I received an email today that the container for Missionary Harold Suggs, headed to Guyana,  will arrive at the  warehouse next Thursday, Dec 6 at 9:00 a.m.  Glory!   We will have two (2) hours to load the container.  They wanted to bring the container this coming Thursday but I still have all of their computers to go through.  So it is going to be a busy week and a half getting everything ready.  Harold is getting 50 computers, 75 school desks, 6 TVs, 12 pallets of text books, and a few other things.  It will take the entire 40 foot container to fit it all.  Pray for Vance and me.

Honduras Trip

I had a fantastic time in Honduras with missionaries Bill and Barbara Strickland.  I preached Saturday night at 5:00 p.m., Sunday Morning at 7:00 a.m., 9:00 a.m., and 11:00 a.m.  The response of the people was wonderful.  They loved singing "O Mwari Wakanaka."

The highlight of the trip was having over 50 young people respond to the altar call giving their lives to be missionaries.  God is really moving in Honduras.  The church was alive!  I enjoyed the singing, the dancing, the excitement, and the move of the Spirit.  The 11:00 service was aired on national TV at 10:00 Monday morning and 7:00 p.m. Monday night.  You missed it didn't you?

Look for all the details in the Honduras Journal when I complete it.

Let me mention two things:

1.  Bill Strickland had his computer stolen a month ago and emailed me to ask if he had Dell send a new computer to my address, could I bring it to Honduras for him.  When I got to Honduras, someone had broken into my luggage and stolen the new computer.  I need to replace it because the airlines claim no responsibilities for electronic equipment.  If you would like to help, I need $1,800 to replace the laptop.

2.  The Church has an English-medium school and desire Teachers from the States.  They offer a pretty good package.  If you are interested or know of someone who would love to teach in Honduras, contact Bill Strickland.  His email is bill.strickland@agmd.org.

I am thrilled to be back home.

A Great Week

Last week was a great week.  On Tuesday we picked up a truck load of goodies from the District One DOT in Bartow.  It was a good contact and the lady in charge wants to put me in contact with other people.  On Thursday we picked up a load from The Turnpike DOT in West Palm Beach.  This was another first.  The DOT has been so nice.  It is a delight working together with them.

This week I have been sorting through all the goodies, organizing them, and putting them on pallets

I will be headed to Honduras in two days.  I will be preaching the Missions Convention for Missionaries Bill and Barbara Strickland in Tegucigalpa.  I am really looking forward to this.  Please hold me up in prayer.

Alabama Trip

I have just returned from a week in Alabama, preaching two times on Sunday, plus attending the District Council on Tuesday and the Sectional Council on Thursday.  It was great to see a lot of old friends and to be able to spend a little time with Mom and Dad in Tuscaloosa.

One of the pastors in Alabama, Chad Payne, had emailed me that he had some computers for me to pick up when I came up for the sectional council.  At the council, I was given a couple of minutes to share about what God is doing with Investing in Futures.  After the meeting, Jason Loper, missionary to Nepal, asked if he could have some computers for Nepal.  I simply walked across the room and spoke with Chad Payne and instead of bringing those computers back to Florida, Jason is picking them up from Pastor Payne.  Now that is networking at its best!

Tuesday I will be going to the DOT in Bartow, Florida to pick up our first load from them, and on Thursday to the DOT in West Palm Beach to pick up our first load from them as well.  Glory!  I have so many requests from missionaries for computers, but God always seems to provide.

We will also be loading and shipping a 40 foot container on Thursday to The Gambia, Africa.  This will be the second container to The Gambia.

DOT computers

The Department of Transport (DOT) office in Orlando called and said we had been awarded all their old computers.  They said they had enough to fill a semi.  So yesterday, we took a semi to Orlando and picked up 100 computers, printers, and a lot of stuff.  It filled up the semi.  Glory!  They said they would be contacting us about every three months with more computers.

Please Pray for Us

I just received an email from Fernanda (the young lady who is the Coordinator for the School of Missions in Venezuela and my personal translator) that she just had an automobile accident and totaled her car.  She said that she is okay but feels like this is a spiritual attempt to thwart the success of the School of Missions.  Since this morning when Dr. Sam Hemby prayed with me at Southeastern, I have felt a heavy anointing and ask you guys to pray for the School of Missions this week that God's purposes will be accomplished. I am confident that this is God's moment for missions around the world and am thrilled to be so deeply involved.

Tobago Journal

Gerry and Sharon finally completed sorting and categorizing the 42 pallets of text books yesterday.  It took them over a month but they did it and did a super job.  A special thanks to the two of them.  They are hard workers.  One side of the warehouse now looks like a book store.  I am attaching the journal of my trip to Tobago if you are interesting in reading it. Pray for me, I will be spending the next two weeks writing a History of Missions course to teach in Venezuela in August.  Life is so exciting.

Adam & Kelly's Wedding

I officiated at a wedding yesterday for two of my former students.  They both graduated last year.  It was a beautiful wedding but a little unusual.  For instance, before the wedding party marched in, the groomsmen entered waving flags of nations Adam and Kelly had visited or flags of nations they intend to visit in the near future.  Both Adam and Kelly were Mission Majors and have traveled to many countries already.  When the wedding party came in, there were 11 guys and 11 girls.  It was the largest wedding party I have ever seen.  Each couple danced or slow-stepped to a different song.  But the song was only one minute in duration.  It was lovely.  Everything else was a normal wedding until I introduced Adam and Kelly as man and wife.  Instead of walking down the aisle, once they had gone down from the platform, Adam kept walking but Kelly stopped.  As Adam turned around halfway down the aisle, Kelly picked up her wedding dress and ran into his arms.  Luckily, he caught her.  I just want you to know, I really tied the knot tight and had so much fun doing it.

Shipment to the Bahamas and Haiti

Today was another one of those red letter days.  We sent out two shipments today.  The first truck load of 9 pallets of computers and printers went to the Bahamas.  Vance and I had the truck loaded by 10:00 a.m. and on its way to Ft. Lauderdale where the pallets will be placed on a ship and should arrive in the Bahamas next Thursday.

At 1:00, a Missionary to Haiti came and picked up two pallets of things (overhead projectors, scanners, VCRs, slide projectors, and listening lab systems.  He was able to get both pallets of stuff in his van but he had to take all the seats out.

Tomorrow, Vance and I head to Valdosta again for another load.  We will be going to both school districts.  This time, we are taking our wives.  They have become real troopers.  It will be a delight having them go along.  We have promised to take them to the Cedar River Seafood Restaurant for all their hard work.  We should have a fun but profitable day.

Stuff is coming in, stuff is going out.  It does not get better than this.  Glory!

Third Trip is a Success

Gerry and I had a good trip going to Valdosta and back getting the third and final load.  Vance and I unloaded the semi today and got everything pretty well organized in the warehouse.  We brought back 17 more pallets of textbooks.  That brings the total to 42 pallets of textbooks.  Oh how I wish I could ship all of them to Ghana immediately.  They need them so desperately.  Got $10,000.00?

Vance has already deleted the data from the harddrives of 78 computers.  22 to go to get the load ready for Mexico.  Vance, thank you so much for your hard work.  He worked both days Gerry and I were in Georgia.

My wife and Vance's wife Sharon worked hard again today categorizing the textbooks.  If they do one pallet a day, it will take 42 days.  That works out to 8 weeks if they work 5 days a week.  In other words, that would take their entire summer.  Maybe Vance and I can help them when we get every ready for the Mexico trip.  We are supposed to have it ready in two weeks.

The plan is to take 5 computers, one printer, five desks, and 20 each of the sets of text books to 20 schools in Mexico.  We hope to get it all in one container but that is a lot of stuff.  Glory!  This is so much fun.

Thank you again for your generous support making it all possible.

Heading To Valdosta Again

My wife and I leave tomorrow for Valdosta for a third load.  The semi is supposed to arrive at 7:00 a.m. Wednesday like it did on Friday.  Vance has been hard at work deleting the data on the computers we brought back Friday and already has 31 reformatted.  We only unloaded the semi Saturday morning.

Vance's wife Sharon and my wife Gerry have been hard at it processing all the books.  Of the 25 pallets of books we brought from Georgia, they have already sorted through 8 pallets. Their legs and backs are killing them, but they keep on going.  They work as hard as Vance.  Sharon and Gerry, thank you so much.

I have contacted three missionaries to see how many books they want so we can get the ball rolling.  If you know any missionaries you think can use Literature and Writing textbooks, have them contact me.

Second load from Valdosta

My wife and I just returned from Valdosta tonight about 8:00 p.m.  We traveled up yesterday and spent the night because the semi was going to arrive at 7:00 a.m. this morning.  By 7:30, Mike Powers and his crew was helping us load the semi with 15 pallets of textbooks and 100 computers.  By 11:00, the semi was headed to the warehouse in Tampa.  But the loaves and fishes keep multiplying.  We will return Wednesday next week for the third load but I am afraid even then we cannot get it all.  It may take a fourth semi.  Glory!  That is a lot of stuff, one horse trailer and 3 semi loads.  There are a lot of people around the world going to be blessed beyond measure.  What a God!

One Year Anniversary

Glory!  Investing in Futures is celebrating its first anniversary.  It has been a whirlwind year.  I have been able to minister in Venezuela, The Dominican Republic, Trinidad, and just last week, Tobago.  Also, we have given away over 750 computers, 750 desks, and seven pallets of text books plus a host of other stuff.

We just returned from Valdosta today.  Mike Powers had told me that he thought we could get everything in Vance's horse trailer.  By the time we got there, Mike Powers said that everything had multiplied like the loaves and the fishes.  So my wife Gerry and I will be traveling up to Valdosta again tomorrow to begin putting everything on pallets for the semi which will arrive at 7:00 a.m. Friday morning.  I have a feeling it is going to take 3 or 4 semi loads to get all this stuff.  Isn't God good.

Requests are coming in from all over the world.  I have never seen anything like it.  Vance told me today that he has never been involved in anything in his life as exciting as this.  He has also applied for a passport for the first time in his life because he also wants to travel overseas with me.  God has really sent me a close, hardworking, friend in Vance.  Vance, thank you so much for all your hard work.  Mike Powers, thank you also for all the supplies you continue to entrusting to us to give out to the world.

I can hardly wait to see what the second year holds!

My Head Is Still Spinning

Wow. What a week and it is only Tuesday. Pastor Kelly Lacy phoned me Friday from Elizabeth City, North Carolina saying that he had won the bid on 500 school desks at a school auction and that I needed to come get them immediately. I send Bro. Phil Robinson of National Disaster Relief out of Jacksonville with his semi rig to North Carolina. Bro. Lacy told me there was no need for me to drive all the way up to North Carolina to help them load the truck, that he would handle it himself. And handle it he did. He had six to eight guys helping him and they had 400 desks loaded on the semi and Bro. Phil was on his way back to Florida in a little over an hour. That is some serious packing.

Pastor Kelly Lacy kept 100 desks with him in North Carolina and is going to deliver them to the Indian Reservation in Lumberton. Glory. What a pastor and what a vision. Pastor Lacy, thank you so much and thank you also for paying for the desks at the auction.

So yesterday (Monday), since I did not have to drive to North Carolina, Vance, Gary, Ernie, and I headed to Georgia at 6:00 a.m., loaded 75 computers, 100 monitors, and some printers into the horse trailer, and still arrived back home in Florida by 5:00 p.m.

Today, we four men met at the warehouse to unload the horse trailer. No more than thirty minutes after we finished unloading all the computers, Bro. Phil arrived from North Carolina and we then unloaded all the school desks. Pastor Lacy and his crew had really packed them in there. School desks must be loaded and unloaded one by one. There is no way to stack desks neatly on pallets. 400 desks are a lot of desks. By the time we finished unloading both vehicles, we were no longer perspiring, we were flat-out sweating. We finished around 1:00 p.m.

At 1:30, Pastor Franco Ferelon of Tampa Gospel Kingdom came to the warehouse to see about getting computers and desks for Haiti. Now isn't that just like God. And what timing. Now get this. Tomorrow we are going to load 165 desks that we just got today and take them to Bro. Ferelon’s church where he has a container ready to ship everything to Haiti. He is also getting 55 computers, 5 TVs, 20 computer desks, 2 typewriters, 2 filing cabinets, 20 inkjet printers and 20 laser printers. Glory. The warehouse is almost empty again. Isn't God good?

If all that is not enough to make your head spin, at about 2:15 p.m., I received a phone call requesting 100 computers for Mexico. At least I have been given one month to get this order ready.

Lord, I need more funds and more computers.
I want to thank each of you for your generosity in helping make all of this possible, and for making my head spin.

Container for Honduras

Glory! We did it. We really did it. The 40 foot container for Missionary Randy Herring arrived at 10:00 this morning and by 1:00 we had it totally loaded. What a job. There were five of us working; Vance Street, William Walker, Orton Queen, Dr. Johnny Strickland, and me. We did not take time for a bathroom break or even to get a drink of water because we did not know if we could really load all the stuff in the allotted three hours. But we did it. I want you to know that packing a 40 foot container is no small task. If you have ever packed a U-Haul truck or trailer, you know how you try to put things in every available space. Imagine doing that in a 40 foot container which is seven feet tall inside. But we packed it to the very back doors. As we put in the last items I told the guys I pity the person trying to unload it. You may want to pray for Missionary Randy Herring. That is going to be his task. Also pray that everything goes smoothly through customs.

A Day to Make Your Head Spin

I do not think more could have been crammed into this day. I left for Tampa at 8:00 a.m. to help Dr. Johnny Strickland with Network of Promise give out 450 boxes of food to the elderly living in the Tampa Housing Authority apartments. It is always rewarding to be involved in helping those lovely people.

On the drive to Tampa, I received a phone call from Pastor Kelly Lacy from North Carolina saying that he was at a school auction where they had 500 desks and 150 computers. He thought he had a good chance of getting them. Isn't that fantastic? What a great friend.

Missionary Bill Strickland from Honduras told me last week that I was on the cutting edge of where missions is going. He said that people want to personally get involved in missions, actually getting dirty for God. This was exactly what Pastor Lacy was doing, attending an auction to get supplies for missionaries. Bill Strickland also said that missionaries are thrilled that people are sending them things they desperately need. What a day to be alive.

All this is on top of having to go to Valdosta to pick up 150 computers there. Now here is where you come in. I desperately need some help financially for all the transportation costs. A semi to Valdosta costs $800 but going to North Carolina is going to take $2300. Help! I am finding out it is very expensive to be involved in missions. At least God has given us a warehouse free of charge. Many compassion ministries have to pay up to $12,000 a month just for warehousing. Isn't God good!

On the way home from Tampa, I received another phone call from the shipper who is providing a 40 foot container for Missionary Randy Herring from Honduras saying that the container arrived in Tampa today, that they will unload it from 6:00 to 9:00 in the morning and will then bring the container over to the warehouse for us to load it. They give us three hours to put in everything. So I went back to the warehouse and worked until 8:30 tonight getting everything for the container put up on the loading deck so we can save time in the morning.

As I said, it was a day to make your head spin, but that's what it is all about. Thank you so much for you interest and help.

Tornado Victims

Vance received a phone call from the First Baptist church of Mango, Florida asking him if he would transport some supplies today to the First Baptist Church in Paisley, Florida, about 115 miles away. The church in Paisley is a distribution center for the tornado victims in that area. I wish you could have been with us when we drove up to the church in Paisley. They starting shouting, Glory, new supplies have finally arrived. They were so excited and thankful. There is still a lot of need in that area and it was good to have a small part in the work.

Great News About Back Injury

Yesterday was my appointment with the Physical Therapist. After spending about fifteen minutes pushing, pulling, prodding, and poking, the Therapist asked me to lie down on my stomach. She then told me that I had dislocated or rotated my pelvis and with a snap, put it back in place. No wonder I have been in such pain. Praise the Lord, the pain instantly went away. I am supposed to do some stretching exercises to make sure the muscles stretch back to their original place, but Glory, I am going to live. This was not a pain unto death! I go back on Wednesday to see how everything looks.

I walked around the block

Glory! Today for the first time since I hurt my back, I felt well enough to walk around the block. This morning about 7:00, the catch in my hip released and I have been feeling pretty good since then. It is a good feeling. I think I am going to live. Thank you for your prayers.

Vance continues to be a great blessing. Not only did he go to Valdosta and get a trailer load of computers and monitors, he has been to the warehouse every day putting the stuff on pallets, deleting hard drives from the computers, etc. Vance, thank you so much for your ministry, not only to God, but to me as well.

I have an appointment with the Physical Therapist on Monday. They will give me some exercises for my back. But the walking this morning sure felt good to me.

Have a great weekend.

Oh, check out my website. It is about 50% completed. Jason Yon is building it for me. Thanks Jason.

Headed for Valdosta

I received a phone call from Valdosta today saying they had 38 computers, 100 monitors, and other stuff but need it removed quickly. As you know, I hurt my back and cannot travel. Vance said, I will go get it. So tomorrow morning (Friday) at 6:00 a.m. Vance, Gary and Trent are headed to Valdosta to get all the stuff. They are so fantastic. But I WANT TO GO! It is hard to watch from the sidelines. Praise the Lord for some more computers. Glory! Pray for Vance and the guys as they travel tomorrow. Mike Powers, thanks for thinking of us again and for having more stuff. You are great.

update

Wondering if I fell off the face of the earth? No, I hurt my back on Monday and have been bedridden for three days. I am finally back in the land of the living. It was only a back sprain instead of a slipped-disk. Praise the Lord.

I am in contact with two different school districts in Georgia for more computers and desks. I have orders for 1050 computers and for 600 desks. Please help me pray that we find favor with the school districts. I have had several people donating computers from 2-3 at a time up to 10 from one church. My computer stash is back up to 50 with all their hard-drives deleted but I have no desks. A missionary at a Native American Reservation is waiting for 200 computers and 200 desks. I still have orders to fill for missionaries and pastors in the Bahamas, El Salvador, Trinidad, Ghana, Honduras, and today I received an order for computers for Guyana. This is so exciting. Please help me pray for supplies.

Office Furniture

I received a phone call from Marilu Hernandez of Channel 32 in Tampa on Monday stating that the TV station was updating some office furniture and wanted to know if I could use seven office desks and four office chairs. I told her “of course,” called Vance Street to bring his 32 foot horse trailer, we loaded the desks, and headed for the warehouse. The great news is that Channel 32 is less than one mile from the warehouse. The Truck Stop Ministry of the Penn Florida Men's Ministry has already claimed one desk and one chair plus a four-drawer file. They are building a permanent chapel at the T/A truck stop at exit 10 in Tampa. Glory! Glad we could all be involved. Thank you Marilu and Channel 32.

All the desks are gone

It is hard to believe, but all 400 desks from Georgia are now gone as of today. The last of the desks were put in a container headed for The Gambia, Africa today. Glory! So that means that the warehouse is almost empty now. It looks so strange. No desks, no computers, only a few laser printers, a few computer desks, and odds and ends. I am in contact with two other school districts in Georgia and one in Florida to see if we can get more computers and desks. There are a lot of people on the waiting list.

I need computers

I just received a request for 200 computers for an Indian Reservation. Help. Would you contact companies near you an see if they could donate computers. I have several school districts I am working with right now as well. This thing is BIG. I need your help as well. Call people.

A Learning Week

Who says “You can’t teach an old dog new tricks?” That is totally an untruth. Vance Street and I proved that proverb wrong last week. Vance is the 72 year old man who drives the 32 foot horse trailer and helps me get computers and desks. The two of us worked every day this past week repairing computers. There were about 120 computers of the 400 that would not work. Many of them simply “beeped” when they were turned on. So I went online, typed in “Repairing Computers” and discovered that when a computer “beeps,” it is sending you a signal of what is wrong with it. It was that simple. Vance and I repaired over fifty (50) computers this past week plus got an order ready for missionaries in the Bahamas for 62 computers, 62 printers, and 50 desks. Glory!
